Sony DTC-57ES Operating Instructions Manual
Do not clean the head with the cleaning cassette more than five times over a short period, and do not rewind the cleaning cassette each time you use it. The cleaning cassette can be used two hundred times, with 10 seconds of cleaning each time.
For more information, see page 40 of the manual.
Was this helpful? What troubleshooting steps can I take if my Sony DTC-57ES is not working?- Tape is ejected after being loaded: Insert the cassette correctly.
- Tape does not move:
- If buttons do not function for 4 seconds after power on, wait until the blinking indicator goes off.
- If the PAUSE button is activated, press the PAUSE button to release pause.
- If the tape is wound completely, press the rewind or fast-forward button to rewind.
- Check for incorrect connections and connect properly.
- Ensure the connected amplifier is operating correctly.
- If recording analog input signals, adjust the recording level using the REC LEVEL control.
- If the safety tab of the cassette is open, close the tab of the cassette.
- Set the INPUT selector correctly (DIGITAL for digital sources, ANALOG for analog sources).
- If a digital copy prohibit signal exists, connect the source equipment to the LINE IN jacks.
- For analog input, connect to the LINE IN jacks (phono jack) from the recording outputs of an amplifier.
- For analog output, connect the LINE OUT jacks (phono jack) to the DAT or tape inputs of an amplifier.
- For digital input, connect to the COAXIAL/OPTICAL DIGITAL IN jacks from the digital outputs of an amplifier or other digital source.
- For digital output, connect the COAXIAL/OPTICAL DIGITAL OUT jack to the digital inputs of an amplifier or another DAT deck.
- For remote control, connect the CONTROL-S IN jack to the CONTROL-S output of a Sony amplifier or receiver.
Always turn off the power for all equipment before making connections and insert plugs firmly to prevent hum and noise. Do not bend optical cables, and cover unused optical jacks with supplied caps.
For more information, see page 12 of the manual.
Was this helpful? How do I record digital audio tapes on the Sony DTC-57ES?- Ensure the TIMER switch is set to the OFF position and turn on the power.
- Insert a cassette and press the OPEN/CLOSE button to load it.
- Set the INPUT selector according to the signal source (ANALOG, OPTICAL, or COAXIAL).
- Press the REC button. The deck enters the record-pause mode. The REC indicator lights and the deck is ready for recording.
- When recording analog input signals, adjust the REC LEVEL and BALANCE controls for optimal levels. For digital signals, adjustment is not necessary.
- To record in long-play mode, set the REC MODE selector to the LONG position.
- Press the PLAY button or PAUSE button to start recording.
- If an end ID is written on the tape, playback stops automatically at the end ID position, and the tape rewinds to the beginning.
- If the PAUSE button is activated, the tape will stop.
- A defective or damaged cassette can cause the tape to stop running suddenly.
- If moisture condensation occurs, the unit's functions will stop.
- If the unit is left in the record-pause mode for about 10 minutes, it will automatically release and enter the stop mode.
- Use the REC LEVEL (recording level) control.
- Observe the peak level meters and the MARGIN indicator to monitor the input signal level.
- Turn the REC LEVEL control so that the "OVER" segments do not light, even at the highest signal level.
- To reset the margin, press MARGIN RESET. The margin will become "--".
- If "OVER" lights steadily, lower the recording level so that the peak level meter lights between -12 dB and 0 dB to avoid sound distortion.
The Sony DTC-57ES is compatible with digital audio tapes made especially for DAT decks. Unlike conventional analog audio cassette tapes, a digital audio tape can be used only on one side. These tapes are designed to avoid dust and have a detector slot at the back. For more information, see page 18 of the manual.
Was this helpful? What are the main audio input and output options available on the Sony DTC-57ES?- Inputs:
- LINE IN jacks (phono jack) for analog input signals, with an impedance of 47 kohms and a rated input level of -4 dBs.
- COAXIAL/OPTICAL DIGITAL IN jacks for digital input signals, with a coaxial impedance of 75 ohms and a rated input level of 0.5 Vp-p.
- LINE OUT jacks (phono jack) for analog output signals, with an impedance of 470 ohms and a rated output level of -4 dBs (more than 10 kohms load impedance).
- PHONES (stereo phone jack) for headphones, with an impedance of 32 ohms and a rated output level of 0.6 mW.
- COAXIAL/OPTICAL DIGITAL OUT jack for digital output signals, with a coaxial impedance of 75 ohms and a rated output level of 0.5 Vp-p ±20%. The optical digital output has a wavelength of 660 nm.
Yes, the Sony DTC-57ES can convert analog audio to digital. It is equipped with a 1-bit A/D converter that converts analog input signals into digital signals, theoretically generating no zero-cross distortion for clear sound quality. The unit digitalizes the audio signal by converting analog sound into a digital signal using PCM (Pulse Code Modulation).
Was this helpful? How does the Sony DTC-57ES function as a DAT recorder? The Sony DTC-57ES functions as a Digital Audio Tape (DAT) recorder by digitalizing the audio signal and recording it on a DAT cassette tape. It converts analog sound into a digital signal using PCM (Pulse Code Modulation), which allows for recording and playback with lower wow and flutter, wider dynamic range, lower distortion rate, and superb signal-to-noise ratio. For more information, see page 3 of the manual.
Was this helpful? How can I check the remaining tape time on a DAT cassette using the DTC-57ES?You can check the remaining tape time on a DAT cassette using the DTC-57ES by observing the REMAINING indicator in the display window. This indicator lights when the counter shows the remaining time of the tape. To cycle through different counter displays, press the COUNTER MODE button. For more information, see page 10 of the manual.
Was this helpful? What does the 'SCMS' system mean on the Sony DTC-57ES and how does it affect recording? The 'SCMS' (Serial Copy Management System) on the Sony DTC-57ES is a system that allows for one generation of digital recording of prerecorded software via digital input/output. This means you can record a compact disc to a digital audio tape via digital input/output, but you cannot record the recorded tape to another tape via digital input/output. However, there are no restrictions for generation when DAT decks are connected via analog input/output.
Was this helpful? What safety precautions should I observe when using the Sony DTC-57ES?- Operate the unit only on 120 V AC, 60 Hz.
- Ensure the plug is fully inserted into the power outlet.
- If any solid object or liquid falls into the cabinet, unplug the unit and have it checked by qualified personnel before further operation.
- Unplug the unit from the wall outlet if it is not to be used for an extended period of time, grasping the plug itself, not the cord.
- Do not install the unit near heat sources, or in places subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust, mechanical vibration, or shock.
- Do not place anything on top of the cabinet to ensure unobstructed ventilation holes.
- If moisture condensation occurs, leave the unit turned on for about an hour if the CAUTION indicator lights and the unit does not operate.
