Jean Piaget: Learning Through Play

Toddlers are like little explorers, constantly absorbing information about the world around them. Through play, they embark on adventures of discovery, honing their cognitive, social, and emotional skills.

Jean Piaget, a renowned psychologist, observed that play is a vital avenue for learning in early childhood. According to his theory of cognitive development, children progress through stages of understanding by actively engaging with their environment. Through play, toddlers experiment with cause and effect, spatial relationships, and problem-solving, laying the foundation for more complex cognitive abilities.

Piaget noted that play provides toddlers with opportunities to assimilate new information into their existing knowledge schemas and accommodate their understanding as they encounter novel experiences. For example, when toddlers engage in pretend play, such as pretending to cook in a toy kitchen, they integrate concepts about food, utensils, and social roles. This imaginative play fosters creativity and flexible thinking, allowing toddlers to explore various scenarios and outcomes in a safe and supportive environment.

Furthermore, games and playful activities just like the grocery shopping game facilitate social interaction and language development in toddlers. Through conversations and interactions with peers and caregivers during play, toddlers expand their vocabulary, learn new words, and enhance their understanding of language structures.

Play is the way!

What’s In The Grocery Shopping Game?

The grocery shopping game contains 12 printables. You will receive the following in the download at the end of the article:

  • 4 printable shopping baskets with 10 food images on each basket
  • 4 printable grocery lists that correspond with the food found on each basket
    • Vegetables
    • Fruits
    • All the carbs!
    • Meat, Dairy and Condiments

    Putting The Game Together

    Game assembly is super easy.

First download the images. Print them. Cut out the small food images and trim down the shopping baskets and grocery lists.

This next step is not crucial, but if you want the pieces to last more than 30 seconds, I’d highly recommend laminating all of the pieces. I recommend this laminator and these laminator sheets.

I 100% guarantee this will not be the only time you use a laminator. Maybe it’s because I’m a former pre-school/kindergarten teacher, but I love my laminator and use it often. It’s perfect for creating printable toddler games and also preserving their precious artwork.

If you do laminate the pieces, simply trim them down and store everything in a large ziplock bag.

To take it to the next level, I’m talking outer space next level, grab some velcro and put small pieces directly above the shopping basket food images and on the backs of the small food images. This makes it way easier to keep track of all the pieces and provides target placement for little hands to aim for.
