Ghana and Japan sign $13.44 million grant to boost power supply in Tamale
Ghana and Japan have signed a $13.44 million grant agreement to improve power supply in Tamale. The collaboration between the Ghanaian government and Japan’s International Cooperation Agency (JICA), marks a milestone in ongoing efforts to strengthen the energy sector in the Northern Region.
The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson signed the agreement on behalf of the Government of Ghana, and Her Excellency Suzuki Momoko, the Chief Representative of JICA Ghana Office, on behalf of Japan.
The grant will fund the construction of a new substation and power distribution lines, designed to stabilize the power supply and enhance the region’s electricity infrastructure.
This project is more than just an upgrade to the power grid—it is a major step toward fostering economic growth and development in the Northern Region. The region, which has faced challenges related to unreliable electricity supply, will see businesses, households, and essential services benefiting from more stable and consistent power. With a reliable energy supply, local industries will have the confidence to grow, and new jobs will be created as a result of the increased industrial activity.
For the people of Tamale and surrounding areas, this initiative represents hope for better livelihoods. The new infrastructure will enable smoother operations for local businesses and contribute to overall community development. With access to reliable electricity, educational institutions, hospitals, and other vital services will operate more efficiently, improving the quality of life for the region’s residents.
Japan’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s development through this partnership reflects the strong bilateral ties between the two nations. As Ghana continues its efforts to bridge the energy gap and accelerate industrialization, this project stands as a key contributor to the country’s long-term vision of becoming a regional economic powerhouse.
Once completed, the project will not only power Tamale but also fuel the dreams of a brighter future for the entire Northern Region.
