After two decades working as a prison nurse, Dee Dee Simon finally stepped onto a stage few ever reach — and left the America’s Got Talent judges completely stunned.

Simon Cowell was close to tears as Dee Dee Simon, a nurse from San Quentin prison, poured raw emotion into her audition with a powerhouse rendition of “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going,” the Broadway classic made famous by Jennifer Holliday.

Dee Dee revealed that apart from her family, no one knew she had even auditioned for America’s Got Talent.

When Cowell asked why she had decided to take the leap, her answer stopped the room.

“You know, it’s always been a door,” Dee Dee explained. “I get to that door, and something always happens — I never get to walk through it. My dream is to finally open that door, walk through, and be able to take care of my family.”

“I love that,” Simon replied, clearly moved. “Great answer.”

He added, “I promise you — we’re all rooting for you. Best of luck.”

Then came the performance.

Dee Dee launched into Jennifer Holliday’s legendary 1982 hit — later immortalized by Jennifer Hudson in the 2006 Dreamgirls film — and from the first note, the atmosphere shifted. So immersed was she in the moment that she kicked off her shoes mid-song. By the final note, she was down on one knee, belting to the rafters.

The reaction was instant.

All four AGT judges sat in stunned silence before rising to their feet as the auditorium erupted in a standing ovation. Simon Cowell appeared visibly emotional, his jaw dropping as the performance unfolded.

“I thought it was spectacular,” Sofia Vergara said. “It came straight from your soul. It was a beautiful gift to witness.”
