壮大な地球を感じる！ジョシュアツリー国立公園 Feel the Earth at Joshua Tree National Park in California!
The very first time I heard about the Joshua Tree was through U2’s album THE JOSHUA TREE. Because I like the songs in the album, I became interested in the strange looking tree as well. To celebrate my big birthday this year, I decided to go to Joshua Tree National Park in California to see it myself.
フリーウェイからの景色I-10
9月最後の月曜日、滞在していたオレンジカウンティ（Orange County) を出発して、その名も「ジョシュアツリービレッジ（Joshua Tree Village）」を目指してフリーウェイを東へ進みます。ほとんど、行き当たりばったりの旅だったので、前日にジョシュアツリー国立公園入口に一番近くて安いモーテルを1泊予約しました。車の外の景色は、ロサンジェルス郊外の街並みからだんだんと建物がまばらな乾燥した砂漠の景色へと変わって行きます。
On the last day of September 2019, my son and I left the Airbnb in Orange County and headed for our destination; Joshua Tree Village. We got on I-10 (Interstate 10), which stretches from Santa Monica, California to Jacksonville, Florida, and drove towards east. After a while, the view outside of the window changed completely and we were in the desert of California.
サンゴルゴニオ峠ウィンドファームSan Gorgonio Pass Wind Farm
砂漠の中に突如、周りの景色に不釣り合いな高いビルが一つそびえ立っています。モロンゴインディアン居留地（Morongo Reservation）にあるカジノです。そのカジノを過ぎたあたりから、道路の両側に白くて大きな風力発電用の風車の列が現れ始めます。この辺りは「サンゴルゴニオ峠（San Gorgonio Pass）」と呼ばれる場所で、両側にある山の標高は9000フィート（2700メートル）を超え、ウィキペディアによると、アメリカでもっとも風の強い場所の一つだそうです。
I-10を下りSR-62（カリフォルニア州高速道路62号線、通称『29パームス・ハイウェイ（29 Palms Highway）』）に入ったところで、横道に入り車を停め、降りようとドアを開けた時に想像以上の強風だと気がつきました。
As soon as we passed the tall building of the casino in Morongo Reservation, big white wind mills appeared on both sides of I-10. The area is called San Gorgonio Pass and according to Wikipedia, it is one of the most windy places in the United States. The rows of giant wind mills lined up across the desert all the way to the foot of the mountains in far distance. What an awesome sight to see!
ハイデザートモーテルHigh Desert MOTEL
62号線を進み、ユッカバレー（Yucca Valley) の街に入る頃から両脇に独特な形の木が現れます。始めて見る本物のジョシュアツリーです！
大きなスーパーやレストランの立ち並ぶ中心地を過ぎて、もうしばらく車を走らせると、いよいよジョシュアツリービレッジに到着です。ジョシュアツリー国立公園の西口がある、人口約7400人（2010年アメリカ国勢調査）の小さな村です。村の入口、中心地の外れにこの日の宿「ハイデザートモーテル（High Desert MOTEL）」があります。
We got off I-10 and took Route 62 (California State Route 62) or “29 Palms Highway”. After passing through town of Yucca Valley, we arrived at Joshua Tree Village. It was easy to spot the motel, which was close to the National Park entrance and cheapest, that we reserved the day before for just one night. I liked the place instantly. Not very new, but the room was clean and walls were newly painted in blue, mint green and white with salmon pink door. All I could see from the window were the motel sign, highway, and bare mountain of the National Park. We decided to stay there one extra day.
砂漠の賢者ジョシュアツリーMeeting the Wise Man
始めに西口にあるジョシュアツリービジターセンター（Joshua Tree Visitor Center) へ向かい、入園料を支払い公園内の地図をもらいます。商用ではない乗用車一台の7日間有効なパスは$30で、期間中何度でも出入りが可能です。料金を支払う際にもらうパンフレットにも記載されていますが、国立公園内のほとんどのエリアでスマホ、携帯電話は圏外です。十分な水と地図を持って行くことが必須です。
対応してくれたセンターの男性職員に、おすすめの場所たずねると、どこも素晴らしいけど、と前置きして、ヒドゥンバレー（Hidden Valley）やバーカーダム（Barker Dam）、晴れの日はメキシコまで見えるキーズビュー（Key’s View）、スカルロック（Skull Rock）を教えてくれました。
高さが10メートルほどあるジョシュアツリーの大木!何度も車を停めて写真を撮ったり、岩山に登ったりしていると、気づいた頃には日が傾きかけていました。いったんモーテルに戻り、割引クーポンに載っていた、近くのインド料理の店「SAM’S PIZZA & SUB AND INDIAN FOOD」で手頃で美味しい本場のインド料理を堪能した後、星を見に公園へ戻ります。
After extending our stay at the motel, we headed to the Joshua Tree Visitor Center and paid the fee to enter the park. It was $30 for one non-commercial vehicle and the pass was good for 7 days. There is no cell phone coverage in the park, so you must get maps at the Visitor Center, and bring plenty of water with you. I could see various shapes and sizes of Joshua Tree in the park. Joshua Tree (Yucca brevifolia) belongs to the genus Yucca. It grows in 600 – 1800 feet elevation of the Mojave Desert. The life span is average of 150 years, however, according to the various information, some of them can live for 1000 years! Joshua Trees are also home to many creatures in the desert.

In Joshua Tree Village, there are some interesting shops and nice little cafes along 29 Palms Hwy. After checking some of the places, we went back to the National Park for short trekking. Barker Dam is a reservoir that was built to hold water for cattle around 1900. Unfortunately the water was completely dried up when we were there, but it was still interesting trail for short hiking (about 1 mile). After the hike, we headed to Key’s View (5185 ft.: 1581m). We were just in time to see the sunset from the ridge. Underneath, I could see town of Coachella and Salton See, which are below sea level, laying in the valley. In the valley, there is also San Andreas Fault where the Pacific and the North American Plates meet. We were not only standing on the ridge of the mountain, but also on the edge of the North American Plate where great force of the earth is generated!
