The Red Shoes
Once upon a time, there lived a small girl who was very beautiful and delicate. However, during the summer, she had to walk without any shoes because her family didn’t have much money. And in the winter, she had to wear big wooden shoes, which made her small feet become very red.
In the center of the village, there resided an elderly lady who was the wife of a shoemaker. She lovingly sat down and used some old red cloth to create a pair of tiny shoes, doing her best with what she had. Although the shoes turned out a bit bulky, her intentions were pure and kind, as they were meant for the little girl named Karen.
Karen was given the shoes and she wore them for the very first time on the day her mother’s funeral took place. These shoes were not really appropriate for such a sad occasion, but Karen didn’t have any other shoes. So, she decided to put her bare feet into them and walked behind the simple coffin.
At that very moment, a big, old carriage passed by, and inside it was an elderly lady. She glanced at the little girl and felt sympathy towards her. Turning to the clergyman, she spoke directly, saying, “Listen carefully, if you allow me to have this little girl, I promise to take good care of her.”
Karen thought that everything that happened was because of the red shoes she wore. However, the old lady considered the shoes to be very ugly, so she decided to get rid of them by burning them. Karen herself always dressed nicely and kept herself clean. She learned how to read and sew, and everyone thought she was pretty. But when she looked in the mirror, it told her something even more wonderful: “You are not just pretty, you are truly beautiful.”
One sunny day, the Queen was traveling through that particular area of the country. Accompanying her was her young daughter, who happened to be a princess. As they passed by, all the people, including Karen, gathered excitedly near the castle. There, at the window, stood the little princess, dressed in elegant white garments, capturing everyone’s attention. She didn’t wear a long trail or a golden crown, but what truly stood out were her beautiful red shoes made of soft leather. These shoes were much more exquisite than the ones sewn by the shoemaker’s wife for little Karen. Truly, there is nothing else in the entire world that can be compared to the sheer beauty of red shoes!
Karen had grown up and reached an important milestone in her life called confirmation. To celebrate this special occasion, she received new clothes, and it was also time for her to get new shoes. The wealthy shoemaker in town invited her to his shop to measure her little foot. Inside his room, Karen saw magnificent glass display cases filled with delightful shoes and elegant white slippers. It was a sight that delighted many, but the old lady accompanying Karen couldn’t fully appreciate it because of her poor eyesight. However, among the shoes, there was a pair of red ones that caught Karen’s attention. They looked just like the ones worn by the princess, and they were incredibly beautiful! The shoemaker explained that they had originally been made for a count’s daughter, but unfortunately, they didn’t fit her.
“Do you think those shoes are made of shiny leather?” inquired the old lady. “They sparkle so brightly.”
“Yes, they do sparkle,” replied Karen. The shoes fit her perfectly, and they were purchased. However, the old lady was unaware that the shoes were actually red. She would have never permitted Karen to wear red shoes for her confirmation, which was about to take place.
Everyone turned their gaze towards Karen’s feet, and as she walked from the church door to the choir, it felt like even the old figures on the monuments, with their stiff collars and long black robes, were staring at her red shoes. Her mind was completely consumed by thoughts of those shoes. She couldn’t help but think about them as the clergyman placed his hand on her head and talked about the sacred baptism, the promise with God, and how she was now becoming a mature Christian. The organ played a deep and serious melody, and the beautiful voices of the children blended with the voice of their wise leader. However, Karen’s mind was occupied solely by her red shoes. Later in the afternoon, news reached the old lady that Karen had worn red shoes during the church service. The old lady expressed shock at this, deeming it highly inappropriate. She insisted that Karen should always wear black shoes to church from now on, even if they were old.
